This approximately 5,000 pound Mesquite tree was heavily infected with Mistletoe. Mistletoe is a parasitic plant that drains moisture and nutrients from the host. It grows its own, independent root system inside the host tree which means the only effective treatment is to remove infected branches. Unfortunately in this case the Mistletoe had spread to the base of the tree which meant branch removal was impossible. Mistletoe is spread by birds and interestingly enough it is particularly common in this Scottsdale neighborhood.
